Instagram Text Formatter
Format Instagram captions and bios with bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, monospace, and small-caps Unicode characters. Paste any text, copy the variant you want, paste it into your Instagram caption, bio, or story. Works because Instagram passes Unicode through unchanged.
How to use the Instagram text formatter
1. Type or paste your text
Drop your caption, bio, or story text into the input box. Every variant (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, monospace, small caps, fullwidth) generates in real time.
2. Pick where it will live
Caption (2,200 chars), bio (150 chars), story text (700 chars), or comment (2,200 chars). Each surface has its own character limit; the live counter at the top updates as you type.
3. Copy the variant you want
Each variant has a Copy button. Tap it; the styled string is on your clipboard. Open Instagram; paste into the caption, bio, or story; post.
When the Instagram text formatter pays off
Bio styling for personal brands
Your Instagram bio is 150 characters. Visual emphasis on your headline or value prop ("๐๐ฅ๐ข ๐๐ผ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต + ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ") draws the eye in a way plain text doesn't. Use bold-sans for clean professional bios, italic-serif for creative / editorial brands.
Caption pull-quotes
Long captions are hard to scan. Pull out a key phrase in bold or italic to act as a "callout" the reader's eye lands on. Bold sentence in the middle of a 6-paragraph caption is the most common pattern.
Story text overlays (typed not stickered)
Instagram stories let you type text directly. Default fonts are limited (Modern, Neon, Typewriter, Strong, Classic). Unicode bold or fullwidth characters add visual variety beyond the built-in font picker.
Section headers in long captions
If your caption has multiple sections (e.g. a recipe with ingredients + steps), unicode small caps or monospace marks the headers cleanly. "แดสแดแด ษชแดs" or "๐ธ๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ด๐ณ๐ธ๐ด๐ฝ๐๐" reads as a header at a glance.
Brand hashtags with style
Your branded hashtag can use Unicode styling for consistency across posts. "#๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ด" reads as a branded mark, not just text.
How the Unicode tricks work (and why)
Instagram passes Unicode characters through unchanged. The "bold" text you see is not real formatting - there is no <b> tag. It is a different set of characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols Unicode block (U+1D400 through U+1D7FF) that visually look like bold or italic letters. They are technically math symbols, not letters.
This works because Unicode includes:
- Mathematical Bold: ๐-๐, ๐-๐ณ, ๐-๐ (serif bold version of Latin alphabet)
- Mathematical Bold Italic: ๐จ-๐, ๐-๐
- Mathematical Sans-Serif Bold: ๐-๐ญ, ๐ฎ-๐
- Mathematical Monospace: ๐ฐ-๐, ๐-๐ฃ (looks like terminal text)
- Fullwidth Latin: ๏ผก-๏ผบ, ๏ฝ-๏ฝ (East Asian wide-character versions)
- Small Caps: แด-แดข (linguistic phonetic symbols)
- Combining diacritics: strikethrough (U+0336), underline (U+0332) - applied to each character
Accessibility caveat (please read)
Unicode bold and italic characters are NOT real formatting. Screen readers (VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA) often handle them differently than plain text. Some readers spell them out letter by letter ("mathematical bold capital W, mathematical bold lowercase e, ..."). Others skip them entirely. Some replace them with the plain-text equivalent at a higher pitch or different tone.
Practical rules:
- Use unicode styling for short visual emphasis (a name, a number, a 1-2 word header). Never for body copy.
- Repeat key information in plain text somewhere in the caption.
- For brand bios, include a plain-text version of your name and title separately from the styled version.
- Avoid unicode characters in URLs and hashtags - links may not resolve, hashtags may not aggregate.
Instagram character limits cheat sheet
| Surface | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Caption | 2,200 chars | Truncated to ~125 chars in feed; full caption on tap. |
| Bio | 150 chars | Hashtags and mentions count. |
| Comment | 2,200 chars | Same as caption. |
| Hashtags per post | 30 total | Best practice: 5-12 relevant ones. |
| Story text | ~700 chars | Soft limit; typed text only. |
| DM message | 1,000 chars | Per message; multiple messages OK. |
Each Unicode character may count differently than a plain-text character in some clients. Monitor the live counter above to stay safely under the limit. See also: text size calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the bold text on Instagram look different from real bold?
Instagram doesn't have real HTML-style formatting (no <b> tag). What looks like bold is a separate set of characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols Unicode block (U+1D400 onwards). The characters visually resemble bold letters but are technically math symbols.
Will the formatting work in my Instagram bio?
Yes. Instagram passes Unicode characters through unchanged in bio, caption, comment, and story text. Copy the variant, paste it into the relevant field, save.
Will screen readers read the bold text correctly?
Not reliably. Some screen readers spell out 'mathematical bold capital A' for each character. Others skip them entirely. For accessibility, always repeat key information in plain text. Use unicode styling only for short visual emphasis.
Can I use this for Instagram captions, stories, AND comments?
Yes. All three surfaces accept Unicode characters. The character limit differs by surface (caption + comment: 2,200; bio: 150; story text: ~700). The live counter shows the right limit when you switch surfaces.
Do hashtags work with Unicode characters?
Generally no. Instagram's hashtag aggregator may treat Unicode-styled text differently from plain text, so #๐๐ถ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ likely won't aggregate with #Fitness. Use plain ASCII for hashtags you want to be discoverable.
Will this work on Threads or Facebook too?
Yes for both. They use the same Unicode-passthrough behavior. The same copied string works across Instagram, Threads, Facebook, and most platforms. LinkedIn also supports it; X (Twitter) supports most but truncates some characters.
Will the bold count as more characters in Instagram's caption limit?
Most Unicode characters count as 1 character in Instagram's limit. Combining diacritics (the underline and strikethrough variants) add an invisible second character per visible character, so 'underline' uses 2x the budget. The live counter accounts for this.
Can I undo formatting once I paste it?
Yes - the Unicode characters can be selected and replaced like any other text. They are just characters, not formatting. Instagram doesn't store them as 'styled' - they ARE the styled glyphs.
