Word counter for essays

A general word counter tells you how many words you wrote. An essay counter goes further. It compares your count to the academic length you have to hit. The 650-word Common App essay, the 4,000-word IB Extended Essay, the 5,300-character AMCAS personal statement, and the 4,000-character UCAS statement all have official limits, and most have hard caps that truncate or reject anything past them.

This counter ships with 15 presets covering high school, college admissions, undergraduate, graduate, IB, medical school (AMCAS, ERAS), and UK undergraduate (UCAS) lengths. The progress bar turns green at the target, amber when you go slightly over, and red with a warning icon when you cross a hard cap. Citation-aware mode strips parenthetical references so you can count body words against the limit the way most graders do.

Essay counter vs word counter vs character counter

A general word counter reports the totals: words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time. It does not know what limit you are writing to. That is fine for a draft, a blog post, or a quick check.

A character counter matters when the platform counts characters, not words. Twitter, Instagram captions, AMCAS, ERAS, and UCAS all count characters (including or excluding spaces depending on the system). If your target is "5,300 characters" or "280 characters," the character counter is the right tool.

An essay counter is built around a single question: am I at the word target my assignment asks for? It defaults to words, locks the target to a real academic limit, warns you when a hard cap is at risk, and handles the edge cases graders care about (citations excluded, hyphenation handled the way Google Docs handles it). Use it for application essays, exams, and academic submissions. Use the general word counter for everything else.

How to hit your essay word count

If you are short, add specific evidence rather than filler. A short college essay usually has one anecdote and one reflection. Adding a second concrete moment, a vivid sensory detail, or a counterexample (where you almost gave up, what you tried first) lifts the word count and the essay's quality at the same time. Avoid adverbs and qualifiers ("really," "actually," "very"). They pad the count without adding substance. If you have used a quote, try paraphrasing instead. Paraphrase usually runs 20-40% longer than the original because you need to set context.

If you are long, cut adjectives first, then adverbs, then redundant clauses. "In order to" becomes "to." "Due to the fact that" becomes "because." "It is important to note that" deletes entirely. Cut transition sentences that summarize what you just said. Cut the conclusion paragraph if it only restates the introduction. For application essays, the title and any heading rarely count toward the limit, but the prompt does not either, so do not pad with the prompt. If you are 20% over, you are missing about 1 paragraph of cuts. If you are over a hard cap (Common App 650, IB EE 4,000, IB TOK 1,600), you have to cut. Past 650 the Common App truncates; past 4,001 IB examiners stop reading. Those are the actual rules, not best practices.

How to use the essay counter

Step 1: Paste your essay

Paste your draft into the box at the top of the page. The counter updates as you type. Your text stays in your browser; nothing uploads anywhere.

Step 2: Pick an academic preset

Open the preset library on the right (or above the textarea on mobile) and click the preset that matches your assignment: Common App 650, IB Extended Essay 4,000, AMCAS 5,300 characters, UCAS 4,000 characters, and so on. Or use the quick pill row above the textarea for round-number word goals (250, 500, 650, 750, 1,000, 1,500, 2,500) and page goals (1, 2, 3, 5 pages).

Step 3: Watch the progress bar

The bar turns red while you are well under, amber as you approach the target, green at 95-100% of the goal, and red with a warning icon if you cross a hard cap. Hard caps are marked with a star in the preset library.

Step 4: Toggle citation-aware mode if needed

Citation-aware mode strips parenthetical references like (Smith, 2024), [1], and (1, 2, 3) before counting. Use it for academic submissions where the citation list does not count toward the body word limit. Docs-compatible mode counts hyphenated tokens as separate words, matching Google Docs.

Step 5: Copy or share

Use the Copy button to put the text on your clipboard, or Share to copy a link with your text and preset preserved. Your last preset and toggle states are remembered next visit.

When the essay word counter matters most

Some assignments hide a hard ceiling that bounces your essay if you go one word over. Others count characters, not words. Hitting the wrong target by even a small margin can sink an application. These are the assignments where this counter pulls its weight.

  • Common App personal statement. 650 words, hard cap. Applications truncate anything past 650 the moment you paste it into the portal.
  • Common App supplements. Per-school short answers in the 250 to 650 word range. Each school sets its own. Use the supplemental preset to switch fast between schools.
  • IB Extended Essay. 4,000 words, hard cap. DP examiners stop reading at word 4,001, which means your conclusion never gets graded if it spills over.
  • AMCAS personal statement. 5,300 characters (not words), spaces included. Roughly 800 words. Switch the counter to character mode and watch the character readout against the 5,300 ceiling.
  • UCAS personal statement. 4,000 characters or 47 lines, whichever you hit first. The line limit catches people who format with extra paragraph breaks.
  • Academic article abstracts. Journals usually publish a 150 to 300 word abstract cap. Going over often means the desk editor rejects the submission before peer review.
  • MBA application essays. Schools split sharply on length: Wharton runs 500 words, HBS runs 900, GSB runs 1,250 across multiple prompts. Loading the right preset per school prevents the Wharton answer from sprawling at GSB length.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is my essay?

Paste your essay into the counter at the top of this page. The live word count appears below the textarea and in the Statistics card on the right. The counter also shows characters, sentences, paragraphs, page count (12pt double-spaced), reading time, and speaking time. If your assignment counts only body words and excludes citations, turn on Citation-aware in the toggles between Target and Statistics.

How long should a college essay be?

Most college admission essays run 250-650 words . The Common App main essay has a 650-word hard cap ; applications truncate text past it. Many supplementals are shorter (100-400 words) with individual caps per school. Some universities ask for longer essays (up to 1,000-1,500 words) in their own application. Always read the prompt for the exact limit before drafting.

How many words is the Common App essay?

The Common App main personal essay has a 650-word hard cap . The minimum is 250 words. Most accepted essays land in the 500-650 range. The cap is enforced by the application form; you cannot submit past 650. Load the Common App preset to count against it.

How many words is an IB Extended Essay?

The IB Extended Essay (EE) has a 4,000-word hard cap . Examiners are instructed to stop reading at word 4,001. The abstract, title page, contents page, references, bibliography, and footnotes that are not part of the argument do not count toward the limit, but in-line citations in the body do count. Most successful EEs land between 3,500 and 4,000 words.

How many words is an IB TOK essay?

The IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay has a 1,600-word hard cap . Most TOK essays fall in the 1,200-1,600 range. The title and references do not count; everything in the body, including in-line citations, does. Past 1,600 the examiner stops reading.

How many words is a personal statement for med school?

For US med school applications ( AMCAS ), the personal statement has a 5,300-character limit including spaces, which works out to roughly 800 words. For US residency applications ( ERAS ), the limit is 28,000 characters (roughly 4,200 words), though most accepted statements run 750-900 words. Both are character-limited, not word-limited; use the AMCAS or ERAS preset for the correct counting mode.

How many words is a law school personal statement?

Most US law school personal statements run 750-1,000 words across 2-3 double-spaced pages. Some schools set a hard page cap (2 pages, Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced) rather than a word cap. Yale's 250-word essay is the famous exception. Load the Law School preset (850 words) as a sensible default.

How many words is a UCAS personal statement?

The UCAS personal statement (UK undergrad) has a 4,000-character / 47-line cap , whichever you hit first. That works out to roughly 500-650 words. The 4,000 characters include spaces, paragraph breaks, and punctuation. Past 4,000 characters or 47 lines the form will not accept the statement.

Does the essay counter include citations?

By default, yes. Turn on the Citation-aware toggle to strip parenthetical references before counting: APA-style (Smith, 2024) , numeric markers like [1] and [2, 3] , and grouped numerics like (1, 2, 3) . Most academic submissions count body words excluding citations; check your style guide for the exact rule.

How many words is a 1, 2, 3, or 5-page essay?

Standard academic format (12pt, Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1-inch margins) runs about 250-275 words per page . So 1 page ≈ 275 words, 2 pages ≈ 550, 3 pages ≈ 825, 5 pages ≈ 1,375. Single-spaced doubles those numbers (1 page ≈ 500 words). Use the quick page pills above the textarea to load the right target.

How do I make my essay longer without padding?

Add specific evidence , not adjectives. A second concrete moment, a sensory detail, a counterexample where you almost got it wrong, or a direct quote from someone in the story all add real words. Cut adverbs ("really," "very," "actually") because they pad without adding meaning. Paraphrase short quotes if you need length; paraphrase typically runs 20-40% longer than the original because you have to set context.

How is essay counter different from word counter?

A general word counter reports your totals without knowing what limit you are writing to. This essay counter is preconfigured with 15 academic length presets (Common App, IB EE, IB TOK, AMCAS, ERAS, UCAS, law school, MBA, undergrad, grad seminar, PhD chapter, and more), warns you on hard caps, and has a citation-aware mode for academic submissions. Use the essay counter for assignments with a defined target. Use the general word counter for everything else.

What's the longest typical essay length?

For coursework: IB Extended Essay at 4,000 words is the cap for high school. Undergraduate research papers run 2,000-5,000 words. Graduate seminar papers run 2,500-5,000. Master's thesis chapters land 8,000-15,000 words. PhD thesis chapters run 10,000-20,000 words each, with full theses 50,000-100,000+. Anything past a PhD chapter is a book project, not an essay.

How accurate is this counter compared to MS Word and Google Docs?

All three split on whitespace, so simple text matches within ±1%. Differences appear with hyphenated words . Microsoft Word counts "well-known" as 1 word; Google Docs counts it as 2. Turn on Docs-compatible to match Google Docs. Default mode (off) matches MS Word. Numbers, URLs, em-dash splits, and contractions all behave the same across all three. If your grader uses Word, leave it off. If they use Docs, turn it on.
