Random Verb Generator
Random action words sorted by what they describe: moving, talking, feeling, making. Show them in past tense, -ing, or every form at once, or switch to charades mode.
How to use the random verb generator
- Pick a verb type such as motion, talking, or feelings, or leave it on Any.
- Choose how many verbs and a difficulty level.
- Pick a verb form: base (swim), past (swam), past participle (swum), -ing (swimming), -s (swims), or all of them on each card.
- For charades, tap the Charades preset. It switches to one big word with a timer and keeps to verbs you can act out.
- Keep, copy, or download the verbs you want.

Past tense, -ing, and other verb forms
Use the Verb form setting to get random verbs in the past tense or any other form. Every verb in the list has all five forms, written in US spelling (traveled, gotten). The "Irregular verbs" preset is the quickest way to drill the verbs that break the -ed rule.
| Base | Past | Past participle | -ing | -s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| swim | swam | swum | swimming | swims |
| buy | bought | bought | buying | buys |
| write | wrote | written | writing | writes |

Action verbs and state verbs
Most verbs here are action verbs: something you do, like run or build. State verbs describe a condition instead (belong, seem, own), and they are harder to act out, so the charades preset leaves them out. To see how many verbs your own text uses, try the verb counter.

Frequently asked questions
What kinds of verbs can I pick?
Motion, contact, talking, feelings, thinking, making, eating and using, change, senses, sports and fights, and social verbs.
How do I use it for charades?
Tap the Charades preset. It shows one everyday action verb at a time in large type, with an optional 30, 60, or 90 second timer.
Can I get random past tense verbs?
Yes. Set Verb form to Past to see each verb in the past tense, like swam or bought. You can also pick past participle, -ing, -s, or All forms.
Can I practice irregular verbs?
Yes. Tap the "Irregular verbs" preset or turn on "Irregular verbs only". It shows verbs like run, buy, and think with all their forms.
How many verbs are in the list?
About 2,744 English verbs, each tagged by type and difficulty.
What is the difference between action and state verbs?
Action verbs describe something you do (jump, write). State verbs describe a condition (belong, seem). Charades mode skips state verbs because they are hard to act out.
Is the generator random?
Yes. Each verb in the filtered pool has an equal chance, using your browser's cryptographic random number generator.
