Shortest Sentence Finder
Find the shortest sentences in any text. Rank by word count, character count, or syllable count. Reverse the view to find the longest sentences instead. Useful for editing for clarity, accessibility audits, and readability improvement.
How to find the shortest sentence in any text
1. Paste the source text
Drop a paragraph, essay, blog post, or document into the textarea. The tool splits on sentence boundaries (period, exclamation, question mark followed by whitespace), measures each sentence by word count, character count, and syllable count, and ranks them.
2. Pick the ranking metric
Three metrics produce different rankings:
- Word count (default) ranks by number of words. "Stop." has 1 word. "She walked." has 2. The shortest by word count are usually 1-3 word sentences.
- Character count ranks by total characters. "I see." (6 chars including space) beats "Stop." (5 chars). Useful for character-budgeted writing (Twitter threads, subtitle scripting).
- Syllable count ranks by syllables. "Yes." (1 syllable) is shorter than "Indeed." (2 syllables). Useful for poetry, song lyrics, and rhythm-sensitive copy.
3. Reverse to find the longest
Toggle Reverse to flip the ranking. The longest sentence (often the run-on that needs editing) appears at the top. Useful for finding sentence-length outliers that hurt readability.
4. Read the avg and median
The sidebar shows average and median sentence length in words. Good news writing runs 12-15 words per sentence average. Academic prose runs 18-25. Tweets and social-media copy run 8-12. A text where median sentence length exceeds 25 is a candidate for editing.
When to find short or long sentences
Readability improvement
Sentence-length variance is a key readability signal. A draft where every sentence is 22-26 words long reads monotone. A draft that mixes 4-word punches with 30-word climbers reads with rhythm. Use the shortest-sentence view to count how many short punches you have; aim for 15-25 percent of sentences under 10 words for natural rhythm.
Accessibility audits
Plain-language guidelines (WCAG, Plain Writing Act) recommend average sentence length under 20 words for high-readability content. Use the longest-sentence view to find the outliers above 30 words and break them up.
Hook and lede editing
Your strongest sentence (the hook) is usually short. If the shortest sentences in your draft are all in the middle, restructure so a 4-7 word sentence opens or closes the piece. The shortest-sentence ranking shows you where the punches already live.
Dialogue editing in fiction
Realistic dialogue mixes short bursts ("Stop." "Why?" "Because.") with longer narrative pieces. The shortest-sentence view surfaces the bursts so you can audit whether your dialogue has enough rhythm. Long uninterrupted character speeches usually need a short interjection inserted for pacing.
Subtitle and caption writing
Subtitles cap at 42 characters per line, 84 chars (two lines) per cue, and stay on screen 1-7 seconds. Use character-count ranking to find sentences that fit a single subtitle line vs need splitting. Pair with the Character Counter for cue-level character budgeting.
How the sentence splitter works
The boundary regex
Sentences are split on a regex pattern: a period, exclamation, or question mark followed by whitespace. This catches the vast majority of English sentences correctly. The pattern is the same one used by most rule-based tokenizers (NLTK's PunktTokenizer uses a similar starting heuristic with a learned exception list on top).
Known false positives
Abbreviations with periods break the splitter. "Dr. Smith arrived." may be counted as two sentences ("Dr." and "Smith arrived."). Same for "U.S.A." or "Inc." or "Mr." A maintained abbreviation list would solve this; in v1 the tool uses the simple regex and false-counts a small percentage of sentences in abbreviation-heavy texts.
Decimals and version numbers
"v2.0.1 shipped." is counted correctly because the period in version numbers is not followed by whitespace before another letter. "$1.5 million was raised." also works correctly. The regex only splits on period+whitespace.
Quoted dialogue
The splitter treats each quoted sentence as separate. "He said, 'I will leave.' Then she left." becomes two sentences: "He said, 'I will leave.'" and "Then she left." which matches how a human reader would parse the dialogue.
Sentence-length distributions by genre
| Genre | Avg words | Median | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| News writing (AP) | 12-15 | 13 | Inverted pyramid, lots of short lead sentences. |
| Hemingway prose | 10-13 | 11 | Iceberg theory; spare and short. |
| Marketing landing copy | 8-14 | 10 | Scannable, bullet-friendly. |
| Academic paper | 22-28 | 24 | Embedded clauses; technical density. |
| Legal writing | 25-35 | 28 | Often a single sentence per paragraph. |
| Social-media post | 8-12 | 9 | Short by character budget. |
| Children's books (ages 4-7) | 5-9 | 7 | Predictable rhythm, short bursts. |
| Modern literary fiction | 14-20 | 16 | Variable; depends on author. |

Frequently asked questions
How do I find the shortest sentence in my writing?
Paste the text into the textarea. The tool splits on sentence boundaries (period, exclamation, question mark), measures each sentence by word count, character count, and syllable count, and ranks them from shortest to longest. The top 10 appear in the ranked list below the textarea.
Can I find the longest sentence instead?
Yes. Toggle 'Reverse' in the sidebar. The ranking flips so the longest sentence (often a run-on candidate) appears at the top. Useful for finding sentence-length outliers that hurt readability.
What does syllable count measure?
Total syllables in the sentence. Short by word count is not always short by syllable count: 'Hemingway lied' has 2 words but 5 syllables; 'I do' has 2 words and 2 syllables. Syllable ranking is useful for poetry, song lyrics, and rhythm-sensitive copy.
How accurate is the sentence splitter?
About 95-98 percent on standard prose. The splitter uses a regex (period/exclamation/question followed by whitespace). Known false positives: abbreviations like 'Dr. Smith' or 'U.S.A.' may count as two sentences. Decimal numbers, dialogue quotes, and version numbers work correctly.
What is a good average sentence length?
Depends on genre. News writing: 12-15 words. Marketing copy: 8-14. Modern literary fiction: 14-20. Academic writing: 22-28. Legal writing: 25-35. Children's books: 5-9. If your average exceeds genre norm, the draft may benefit from breaking long sentences.
How does median differ from average?
Median is the middle value when sentences are sorted. Average is the sum divided by count. If one 50-word sentence is mixed with twenty 8-word sentences, the average is inflated (~10 words) but the median stays at 8. Median is more resistant to outliers and a better single-number summary.
Can I rank by character count instead of word count?
Yes. Pick 'Character count' in the Ranking dropdown. Useful for character-budgeted writing: Twitter threads (280 per tweet), subtitles (42 per line), SMS (160 per message).
Is the text sent to a server?
No. All analysis runs in your browser. Manuscripts, blog drafts, transcripts, and any text stay on your device. The tool does not log, fingerprint, or transmit the input. See also: Text Splitter.
