How to use the consonant counter
1. Paste or type your text
Drop a paragraph, essay draft, password idea, lyric sheet, or full document into the text box. Plain text, copy from Word, Google Docs, Slack, or email all work. Counting starts the moment you type.
2. Read the headline number
The red total at the top of the sidebar shows total consonants. It updates on every keystroke. The consonant ratio under it is consonants divided by total letters, expressed as a percentage.
3. Check the top-10 chart
The bar chart ranks the ten most frequent consonants in your text from largest to smallest. In standard English prose, t, n, s, r, and h take the top five spots most of the time. If your top-10 looks unusual, you have either a short sample, a technical text (lots of acronyms, proper nouns), or a deliberate stylistic choice.
4. Toggle y as a consonant
The default for this counter is y off, because y functions as a vowel in the majority of English words it appears in. Turn the toggle on if your use case is consonant-cluster work (Scrabble, hangman, phonics drills) where y at the start of a syllable matters as a consonant.

Password-strength rules of thumb favor consonant-heavy strings because they map further from dictionary words. xkcdhrtq at 100 percent consonants looks more random than iloveyou at 50 percent. Why y is sometimes a consonant
Y is the only letter in English that flips role based on position. As a consonant, y carries a sliding sound at the start of a syllable: yes, yellow, beyond, canyon, youth. As a vowel, y carries one of three vowel sounds: short i (gym, myth), long i (fly, cry), or long e (happy, silly).
Roughly 5 percent of y-occurrences in standard English text behave as consonants. The counter ships with y off by default because the consonant-as-vowel case dominates. What is a normal consonant-to-letter ratio?
Standard English text averages around 60 to 62 percent consonants by letter. Technical and scientific writing often runs higher. Songs and poetry run lower because of the open vowel sounds that sing well. Use the ratio to compare your draft against the style benchmark you are writing in.
Are accented letters or non-Latin letters counted?
No. The counter targets plain ASCII letters a-z only. Accented letters, characters with diacritics, and non-Latin scripts (Cyrillic, Greek, etc.) are not classified in this version. Paste a normalized copy of your text if you need full Unicode coverage.
How are digraphs like 'th', 'sh', and 'ch' counted?
Each letter is counted individually, not as a digraph unit. In the word shop, s and h each add one to the consonant total. If you need to count phonetic units rather than letters, this tool is not the right fit, because consonant detection here is letter-by-letter only.
