Hashtag Counter
Count the hashtags in any social post or caption. Live count, per-platform limits (Instagram 30, TikTok 100, X unlimited, LinkedIn recommended 3), duplicate detection, and a per-hashtag length check. Runs in your browser.
How to count hashtags in a post
1. Paste the post
Drop the full post or caption into the Input box. The live counter on the right starts updating as you type. The tool finds every word starting with # and treats it as a hashtag.
2. Pick the target platform
The Platform selector switches the recommended limit and the warning behavior. Instagram caps at 30 hashtags per post (caption + first comment combined) and the engagement-driven sweet spot is 5-10. TikTok has no hard hashtag count but caption length caps at 2,200. X recommends 1-2. LinkedIn recommends 3. Facebook: 0-2.
3. Read the metrics
Total hashtags counts every occurrence. Unique counts distinct hashtags. Duplicates is total minus unique. Avg length is the average characters per hashtag (excluding the #). Longest shows the longest single hashtag.
4. Review the hashtag list
The Hashtag list panel lists every unique hashtag with its frequency. Click Copy hashtags to paste them one-per-line into the first-comment slot (Instagram tactic).
When you need a hashtag counter
Platform hashtag rules
| Platform | Hard limit | Engagement sweet spot | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 per post (caption + first comment combined) | 5-10 | Bio caps at 20 | |
| TikTok | No hashtag count limit (caption 2,200 chars) | 3-5 niche + 1-2 trending | Long caption-style hashtags work |
| X / Twitter | No hard limit (280-char tweet) | 1-2 | 3+ is widely flagged as low-quality |
| No hard limit | 3 | More than 5 reads as keyword-stuffing | |
| No hard limit | 0-2 | Hashtag reach is weak; mostly skip | |
| YouTube | 15 tags in description | 3-5 in title + description | First 3 in description show above the title |
Hashtag strategy notes
Hashtag effectiveness varies by platform and changes faster than most "best practice" articles update. As of 2026, Instagram has been gradually de-emphasizing hashtags in favour of search-keyword indexing of caption text. TikTok still rewards hashtag-driven discovery, especially for niche communities. X has all but deprecated hashtags as a discovery tool; they read as a "small account" signal now. LinkedIn rewards 3 well-chosen hashtags more than 10 generic ones.
Mixed-size strategy is the durable advice: combine 1-2 broad hashtags (high reach, low conversion) with 3-5 niche hashtags (smaller reach, higher engagement). The tool helps you see the balance: hashtag length is a rough proxy for niche (longer = more specific = smaller community).
Duplicate hashtags within a single post are wasted slots and a weak quality signal to most algorithms. The Duplicates metric flags this so you can substitute a different hashtag.

Frequently asked questions
How do I count hashtags in a post?
Paste the post or caption into the Input box. The count updates live in the right panel. The tool finds every word starting with # (a hashtag), counts the total, and lists each one with its length.
What counts as a hashtag?
A hash sign # followed immediately by one or more letters, digits, or underscores. Hashtags cannot contain spaces, punctuation other than underscore, or special characters. The regex is #[A-Za-z0-9_]+ in line with what major platforms (Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn) treat as a hashtag link.
What are the platform hashtag limits?
Instagram: 30 hashtags per post (caption + first comment). Bio: 20. TikTok: about 100 hashtags per caption (the limit is the 2,200-character caption limit, not a count). X (Twitter): no hard limit but 1-2 is the engagement sweet spot. LinkedIn: 3 hashtags is the platform-recommended sweet spot for posts. Facebook: no hard limit, but more than 3-4 hurts reach.
Are duplicate hashtags counted twice?
In the total count, yes (every occurrence counts). In the unique count, no (#brand mentioned three times counts as 1 unique). Instagram and TikTok algorithm penalises blatant duplication; the duplicate detection flag warns when you have more than one occurrence of the same hashtag.
Does case matter?
No. #Brand and #brand are the same hashtag to Instagram, TikTok, X, and LinkedIn. The tool treats them as equal for the unique-count metric. Display preserves the original case.
What is the optimal hashtag count per platform?
Instagram: research suggests 5-10 hashtags per post (no longer the old "30 maxed out" tactic). TikTok: 3-5 niche hashtags + 1-2 trending. X: 1-2 hashtags. LinkedIn: 3 hashtags. Facebook: 0-2 hashtags. These are engagement-driven, not platform-enforced; the tool flags the platform recommendation in the Platform selector.
Can I export the list of hashtags?
Yes. The Hashtag list panel shows each unique hashtag and its frequency. Click Copy hashtags to copy the list one-per-line; click Download .txt for a file.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting runs in client-side JavaScript. Input stays in the browser tab. We have no upload endpoint and we do not log content. See also: Facebook Text Formatter.
