Replace Newline with Comma

Turn any vertical list into a comma-separated row. Type or paste one item per line; the tool emits a single line with commas (or any custom separator). Options for quote-wrapping, custom spacing, and skipping blank lines.

How to replace newlines with commas

1. Paste your vertical list

Drop a vertical list (one item per line) into the left textarea. The comma-separated version appears in the lower textarea immediately. The default separator is comma + space, which matches the standard CSV row format and what most spreadsheets expect.

2. Pick a separator

Nine separator options cover the common cases: comma+space (default), comma only, semicolon (EU CSV convention), pipe, tab (TSV format), dash, or any custom string. SQL IN() clauses use comma without space; CSV row paste-back uses comma + space; pipe is common for shell command parsing.

3. Quote-wrap for SQL or escaped CSV

Turn on "Wrap each item in quotes" for SQL IN('a', 'b', 'c') output (use single quotes) or for CSV cells containing special characters. The default uses double quotes; for single quotes, edit the output after copy.

4. Trim and skip-blank toggles

Trim removes leading and trailing whitespace from each line before joining. Skip blank lines removes empty lines from the output. Both defaults are on; turn off if your downstream system needs whitespace or blank-line markers preserved.

5. Copy or download

Copy puts the joined row on the clipboard. Download .csv writes the row to a file. The Items joined count in the sidebar confirms how many lines were merged. Use the Character Counter on the output if you need to check the total length against a paste-target limit.

When you need newline-to-comma conversion

SQL IN clause from a list

You have 200 user IDs in a vertical list from a CSV export. The SQL query needs them in WHERE id IN (1, 2, 3, ...) format. Paste the list, pick comma + space (no quotes for integers; turn on quotes for strings), copy the output, paste into the SQL. Done.

Excel paste-back as a single cell

Excel sometimes splits a paste across cells. Joining the column into a single comma-separated row first, then pasting into Excel, lands all values in one cell. Useful for tag columns, hashtag lists, and category fields that should be CSV inside a single cell.

HTML / Markdown bullet collapse

Your draft has 12 bullet points but the publishing template requires the same content as a comma-separated inline list. Strip the bullet characters first (text-cleaner or word-replacer), then run newline-to-comma. Result: "apple, banana, cherry, date." inline.

Shell argument construction

Many CLI tools accept comma-separated arguments (--include a,b,c). Build the list one-per-line in your editor, run through the converter, paste the result behind the flag.

API request body

REST and GraphQL APIs often accept array parameters as comma-separated strings. Same as shell: build one-per-line, convert, paste.

Cleaning email recipient lists

Mass-email templates often need recipients comma-separated. Paste the vertical list of emails, leave defaults (comma + space, trim, skip empty), copy the output into the To field.

Inverse: comma-to-newline

For the opposite operation (a comma row that needs to become a vertical list), use Column to Comma Separated in reverse mode, or use Add Line Breaks with the comma mode. A common workflow: convert a list to comma format, edit (re-order, deduplicate, add notes), convert back to vertical, edit further, and back again.

For pure deduplication with no format change, use Remove Duplicate Words on the vertical version before joining. Combining these three tools (convert + dedupe + convert) handles every list-cleaning workflow.

CSV format conventions

FormatSeparatorQuote-wrapUsed by
Standard CSV (US)Comma, no spaceOnly if value contains comma or newlineExcel (US), Google Sheets, RFC 4180
EU CSVSemicolonOnly if value contains semicolonExcel (EU locale), where comma is the decimal separator
TSV (tab-separated)TabNo quoting neededProgrammatic data exchange, bash scripts
SQL IN clauseComma + spaceSingle quotes for strings, no quotes for numbersSQL WHERE id IN (1, 2, 3) or IN ('a', 'b')

The default comma + space matches the format most readers expect when looking at an inline list ("apple, banana, cherry"). For strict RFC 4180 CSV, use comma without space.

Privacy and processing

All conversion runs in your browser. Customer lists, internal IDs, email addresses, and confidential data stay local. The tool does not transmit the input, does not log, and does not store. Safe for any list you would not paste into a third-party SaaS converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a list (one per line) to a comma-separated row?

Paste the list into the left textarea. The comma-separated row appears in the lower textarea immediately. Default separator is comma + space; pick a different separator from the dropdown or type a custom one.

Can I use semicolons instead of commas?

Yes. Pick 'Semicolon + space' or 'Semicolon only' from the Separator dropdown. Common for EU-locale CSV files where comma is the decimal separator and semicolon is the field separator.

How do I get quoted strings for a SQL IN clause?

Turn on 'Wrap each item in quotes'. Each item is wrapped in double quotes. For SQL IN clauses that require single quotes, edit the output after copy (find-and-replace double-quote with single-quote). Pick the comma + space separator to match typical SQL formatting.

Does it skip blank lines?

Yes by default. The 'Skip blank lines' toggle is on, so empty lines in the source do not produce extra separators in the output. Turn off if your downstream system needs blank-line markers preserved.

Will it trim whitespace from each line?

Yes by default. Each line's leading and trailing whitespace is stripped before joining. Turn off if whitespace inside the line needs to be preserved (rare).

Can I use a tab separator (TSV)?

Yes. Pick 'Tab' from the Separator dropdown. The output is tab-separated, ready to paste into a TSV file or a shell command expecting tab-delimited input.

What is the maximum list size?

No hard cap. The tool processes thousands of lines in well under a second. Browser performance degrades only past a few megabytes of text. For 10,000+ row CSV conversion, the tool still works but a dedicated streaming CSV tool may be faster.

Is the data sent to a server?

No. All conversion runs in your browser. Customer lists, IDs, email addresses, and any confidential data stay on your device. The tool makes no network call when you paste or copy. See also: Remove Commas.
