WhatsApp Status (text) under the 139 cap

The 139-char heritage

The original WhatsApp Status (the text under your name, before the Stories-style ephemeral Status arrived in 2017) capped at 139 characters - roughly one SMS minus the 21 chars reserved for the system. The newer ephemeral Status (text variant, the colored background screens) kept the same 139 cap for consistency.

Front-load the hook

Status shows next to your name on the chat list (above your last message preview) and in the dedicated Status tab. People read the first 40-60 chars. The rest is below-the-fold even within the 139 budget.

Emoji cost

Most single emoji count as 2 chars each on WhatsApp (UTF-16 surrogate pairs, same as Twitter). A 4-emoji Status costs 8 of your 139 chars. Combined emoji (flags 🇺🇸, family groupings 👨‍👩‍👧, skin-tone variants 👍🏽) can count as 4-11.

Status copy patterns that work

"Working on X. Back Friday." (24 chars). "Out of office until Mon, replying after 9am ET." (47 chars). "DMs open for collab pitches only - press via email." (51 chars). "📍 Paris until next week. Calls on EU time." (40 chars). Patterns that fit 139 with budget to spare.

About vs Status: the difference

Both fields cap at 139 characters. They differ in persistence and visibility:

  • About is permanent. You set it once and it stays under your profile name until you change it. Visible to anyone who can view your profile (contacts, group members).
  • Status (text variant) disappears after 24 hours. It's the WhatsApp version of an Instagram Story. Visible in the dedicated Status tab to contacts who have you in their address book.

Use About for stable identity ("Designer at X • Coffee enthusiast • DMs open"). Use Status for current state ("Out of office until Friday" or "Watching the Champions League final 🍿"). Mixing them blunts both - About changes look noisy; static Status updates waste the 24-hour visibility.

Channel description: the 4,096-char surface

WhatsApp Channels (launched 2023) added a content-creator surface to the app. Channel admins can broadcast one-way messages to followers. The Channel description field caps at 4,096 characters, the most generous text field on WhatsApp by an order of magnitude.

What fits in 4,096 chars

Roughly 700-900 words. Enough for a full bio, content schedule, archive of past topics, link list, and topic preview. The first 150-200 chars appear in the channel discovery preview, so front-load identity and value prop the same way you would for a Substack or YouTube About page.

Formatting

WhatsApp supports asterisks (*bold*) for bold, underscores (_italic_) for italic, tildes (~strikethrough~) for strikethrough, and backticks (`monospace`) for monospace. Bullet lists render via Unicode bullet character (•) or dashes. Channel descriptions are one of the few places where extended formatting matters.

Link strategy

Links in Channel descriptions are clickable. Lead with one primary CTA (your website, newsletter signup, or main social channel). Tail with one or two secondary links. More than three links and the description starts looking like a link tree, which dilutes the call to action.

Group description: the 512-char surface

Group descriptions appear below the group name in the group info screen. Members tap the group name to open the info; the first thing they see (above the member list) is the description. 512 chars is roughly 80-100 words.

What to fit in 512: group purpose (1 sentence, 30-50 chars), the ground rules (3-5 bullets, 200-300 chars), admin contact info (1 line, 30-50 chars). A common pattern:

🎯 Purpose: Daily SEO tips & news. No promo, no spam.

📜 Rules:

This template runs ~280 chars, leaving room to expand the rules or add a "what we DO talk about" section. Use the Character Counter for character-level budgeting if you exceed 512.

Privacy and processing

All counting runs in your browser. Status drafts, About iterations, group description rules, channel descriptions, and confidential message drafts stay local. The tool does not log keystrokes, does not transmit the input, and does not store the source. Safe for any text including draft messages to people you have not yet messaged.

Frequently asked questions

What is the WhatsApp Status character limit?

139 characters. Both the legacy About-style Status (text under your profile name) and the newer 24-hour ephemeral text Status (colored background) cap at 139. The number traces back to SMS conventions (one SMS = 160 chars; 21 reserved for system metadata = 139).

What is the WhatsApp About character limit?

139 characters. Same cap as the text Status. About is permanent under your profile name, where text Status disappears after 24 hours. Use About for stable identity, Status for current state.

How many characters can a WhatsApp message contain?

65,536 characters per message. Effectively unlimited for chat. The forwarding limits (max 5 chats at once for highly forwarded messages) prevent broadcast spam regardless of message length.

What is the WhatsApp group description character limit?

512 characters. Shown below the group name in the group info screen. Fits roughly 80-100 words - enough for purpose statement, 3-5 rules, and admin contact info.

What is the WhatsApp Channel description character limit?

4,096 characters. The longest text field on WhatsApp by an order of magnitude. Channels (launched 2023) are one-way broadcast surfaces; the description is your channel's bio plus value prop plus link list. Front-load identity in the first 150-200 chars (the preview window in channel discovery).

Does WhatsApp count emoji as 1 or 2 characters?

Most single emoji count as 2 because they take 2 UTF-16 code points (surrogate pairs). Combined emoji (flags, family groupings, skin-tone variants) count as 4-11. The counter mirrors what WhatsApp enforces. For bio efficiency, use minimum emoji.

What is the WhatsApp display name limit?

25 characters for the display name. Tight. Most users run 8-15 characters. Emoji allowed and count as 2 each. The display name shows next to every message you send, on every chat that has you in it, so keep it scannable.

Is my draft sent to WhatsApp or any server?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser. Status drafts, About iterations, group description rules, channel descriptions, and draft messages stay on your device. No keystroke is sent anywhere. See also: Facebook text formatter.
